Description
The walls of the walled garden at Nanteos date back to the 19th century and are constructed of rubble stone, featuring an inner face of red brick on the north and west sides. The walls stand over 3 meters high and enclose approximately 2 acres (0.8 hectares) of land. The enclosure is irregularly shaped, with the longer walls oriented east-west and a curve to the northwest, generally topped with wide slate coping. Sections of the wall have collapsed, specifically to the south in 1996 and to the east in 2000.
There are eight entrances to the garden, but all except three are blocked. The main western entrance has been enlarged to allow for tractor access in the 20th century. A former low entrance, located about 10 meters to the south of the main entrance, features a flat brick head and brick dressings but is now blocked with rubble. The northeast entrance is modern and includes some 20th-century brickwork.
To the south, there is a small pedestrian gate with a cambered brick head, which is accompanied by a mid-19th century cast-iron gate. This gate has a short lower section adorned with five diagonal crosses in decorative scrolls beneath a double horizontal bar, and it is topped with lance-head finials. Additionally, there is a former toilet structure on the outer northwest side that is now very ruinous, as well as a small privy attached to the outer wall at the southwest angle. This privy is made of rubble stone with a flat roof and has an altered door to the east, featuring a red brick head and right jamb, which is said to have been for the private use of the Powells.
