Description

Nanteos Lodge is an entrance lodge built in the Italianate style, featuring painted stucco and standing two storeys tall. It has a hipped, deep-eaved roof and a taller belvedere tower with a pyramid roof at the southeast corner. The building has raised quoins at the west angles, large brackets supporting the wide eaves, narrow Italianate arched windows on the first floor, and large 12-pane sash windows on the ground floor, all with sills on brackets. The south front consists of two bays, while the west end has one bay.

On the south front, there is a door to the right with a moulded arched head, a sash window to the left under a cornice supported by consoles, and small arched windows on the first floor with moulded imposts and sills on brackets. Above the door is a single light, and to the left is a three-light window, closely set with a single sill. The west end features a similar large 12-pane sash and a three-light window above. A lean-to at the rear has a west end with a similar pair of arched windows above a plain square-headed window. The building has a plain barge board, which extends with a further lean-to on the north side that includes a 20th-century door. The main house has a tall chimney on the north wall made of black brick, which was originally stuccoed and corniced.

The east elevation has the tower to the left of a one-window range, featuring a similar 12-pane sash and an arched two-light window above. To the right is a 20th-century full-height extension with a roof that carries over, a 20th-century door, and a square plate glass window above, with a hipped roof to the north.

The belvedere tower is channelled to the eaves height of the lodge, with plain stucco above. The south face has an arched stair-light between the storeys with a wide sill on console brackets and a raised moulded arched head. The belvedere stage has smaller similar windows on each side.

Attached at the southwest corner is a short section of cast iron railings with Gothic heads beneath the top bar and finials featuring alternate acorns and five-pointed spikes. Only one gate pier and gate survive, with the gate matching the style of the lodge. The pier is made of cast iron, square with openwork panels on the sides, a cornice, a pyramid cap, and a large vase finial. The corresponding gate and pier to the south of the drive have been removed, leaving a short length of railing.

The building was not inspected at the time of the survey.
