Description

The retaining wall of the Patent Slip is a Grade II listed structure. It is a long rubble stone wall that slopes upwards from the beach to the cliff behind. The wall is constructed from large, roughly dressed blocks of rubble stone and features a raking parapet wall made of similar material. Behind the wall is the sloping slipway, which was used for hauling ships by a patent slip mechanism that was installed in 1863 and dismantled in 1901. The front wall has four cavities, each containing a massive iron ring with attached chains. The slip was mainly used for repairing or lengthening ships and was equipped with a cradle on iron rails.
