Description

Gelli is a house comprising two main phases of development, dating from the early 18th century and the late 18th century. The original house, now forming the rear range, faces east, with a later range added across the south end, facing south.

The south range is roughcast, with render on the main front, and has a slate hipped roof with a rear chimney gable. A stone stack is joined to the south stack of the older house, featuring a cornice and four diagonally-set brick shafts. It is a two-storey, three-window range, with deep eaves and paired brackets. The first floor has 12-pane sashes, while the ground floor features unusual Palladian tripartite windows with an arch-headed sash in the centre and fixed louvred shutters instead of side-lights. The windows are embellished with fluting and console details. A fine Gothick porch has two quatrefoil columns and matching responds, a flat cornice with Gothick detail, and two oval lights pierced in the frieze. The east end has a similar Palladian ground floor window, but without the console detail, and a 12-pane sash above. A first floor sash is present on the rear left, alongside a hipped lean-to in the angle with the older rear range. The roughcast west end has a single first floor sash.

The rear range is whitewashed rubble with a slate roof and stone end stacks, the left stack joined to the rear stack of the front range. Both stacks are corniced and feature red brick. The roof extends horizontally from the wallplate. This range is two storeys and five windows, notable for remarkably retaining original timber cross-mullions and leaded glazing. Originally, the windows appear to have comprised three fixed lights and one opening casement, though some lower lights have been altered to timber casements. The survival of original leading, including curved-headed glass pieces in the top lights, is exceptional. The windows have timber lintels. A central door has two glass panels. Two ground floor right windows have been replaced by a single 12-pane sash. The rear stair gable features a lunette and a long window. Added lean-tos are situated on each side, constructed later.

The older range has a centre passage plan, incorporating six heavy beams, a large timber lintel over the south fireplace, and fielded-panelled shutters in the south room. The oak stair has wide treads, a closed string, plain square newels, and twisted balusters, rising over four flights to the attic, with splat balusters on the attic landing. The attic roof is supported by four massive collar-trusses with trenched double purlins, with a similar truss in the stair gable. The south range features a centre hall and room on each side. The hall has a plaster leaf cornice and six-panel doors of Regency type. A timber stair rises on two sides of the hall, with stick balusters and a ramped rail, featuring a coved ceiling. Six-panel doors of Regency type are present throughout, alongside simple cornice mouldings in the southeast and southwest rooms. The southwest room contains an elliptical arch to a western recess.
