Description
Bethania Chapel is a Calvinistic Methodist chapel built in 1832 and altered in 1872-1873 by builder James Williams of Aberystwyth, as noted on a plaque. The exterior features whitewashed stucco with a slate roof. The tall lateral front has two large arched windows at the center, flanked by two slightly smaller arched gallery lights and two flat-headed doors that are slightly recessed and not aligned with the gallery lights. The windows have 1872 eight-pane glazing, with stucco moulded hoods that include keystones and patterned stops, as well as angle quoins. The doors are 20th-century six-panel designs. The north side and rear are finished in whitewashed rubble stone, while the south side is slate-hung. Each end wall has a 12-pane upper sash window, and the rear features three 12-pane sashes above and two larger 12-pane sashes below.
Inside, the chapel has a five-sided gallery with a front panelled in long horizontal and square panels, decorated with stencil patterns. It has a deep overhang supported by eight plain iron columns. The ceiling is flat and plastered. The floor is raked, with pitch-pine pews and a narrow balustraded great seat. The pulpit features ball-finials on the newels and a canted front with punched decoration. There are two ornate iron brackets for oil lamp globes attached to the pulpit, and the pews have carved wood stands for oil lights.
This chapel is listed as a well-preserved example of a lateral fronted chapel from the 1830s, showcasing a renewed facade and a notable interior from 1872.
