Description
Bethesda Independent Chapel is a 19th-century building constructed in 1840. It features a rubble stone exterior with a slate hipped roof and paired brackets at the eaves. The chapel has a rectangular plan with a lateral facade that includes two long arched center windows, outer cambered-headed doors with traceried overlights, and, not aligned, outer arched gallery lights. A small arched plaque on the facade states, "Bethesda Chapel was built in the year 1840." All openings are adorned with cut stone voussoirs, and the windows have plain timber Y-tracery. The doors are framed and ledged.
The chapel has two-storey sides with one window each and a two-window rear, featuring 6-pane sashes above and 12-pane sashes below, with recessed stone voussoirs and keystones. The front is enclosed by railings on a low coped wall, with two central slate piers and iron gates, along with Cilgerran stone pyramid-capped outer piers.
Inside, there is a five-sided timber gallery with a painted grained panelled front supported by four marbled timber columns. The interior features vertical panelling above a moulded cornice, and the pulpit has arched panels at the front with curving steps on each side, topped with turned newel finials. The chapel also contains painted grained box-pews and a great seat, along with a later 19th-century boarded flat ceiling that has dividing ribs.
