Description

12 Crescent Street is a pair of three-storey former back-to-back houses located in Penygloddfa, Newtown. They are built from painted English garden wall bond brick and feature a gently pitched slate roof with a dentilled eaves cornice and brick end stacks. The second floor has shallow four-pane late 19th-century sash windows, while the first and ground floors have 19th-century four-pane sashes. The windows have cambered brick voussoirs, plain reveals, and stone sills. There are blocked windows in the center of the first and second floors above a tunnel passage. The rear of No. 11 has good small-paned iron casements. The doorways have plain doorcases with gabled hoods on brackets and original doors, and there is a round-arched tunnel passage entry at the center.

At the rear, there is a cobbled court that was formerly Joiner's Court, with later sunk drains. This area includes a range of three two-storey cottages, also built from painted English garden wall bond brick, with a slate roof and dentil eaves cornice. The brick stacks are truncated on the right. The first floor has a decayed two-light small-paned iron casement below the eaves, with a top left opening light. The ground floor features cross windows with an iron opening light. The doorways are offset to the right, except for the right end cottage, where it was originally to the left but is now blocked. The cottages have cambered header arches, shallow reveals, and no sills, with heavy frames and repaired plank doors. This site is a good rare example of the smaller houses found within the courts.
