Description
11 Crescent Street is a pair of three-storey, one-window former back-to-back houses located at 11 and 12 Commercial Street, with Joiner's Court at the rear in Penygloddfa, Newtown. The houses are constructed of painted English garden wall bond brick and feature a gently pitched slate roof with a dentilled eaves cornice and brick end stacks.
The second floor has shallow four-pane late 19th-century sash windows, while the first and ground floors have 19th-century four-pane sashes. The windows are adorned with cambered brick voussoirs, plain reveals, and stone sills. There are blocked windows in the center at the first and second floors above a tunnel passage. The rear of No 11 has good small-paned iron casements. The doorways have plain doorcases with gabled hoods supported by brackets, and they retain their original doors. A round-arched tunnel passage entry is located at the center.
At the rear, there is a cobbled court that was formerly Joiner's Court, which has later sunk drains. This area includes a range of three two-storey cottages, also built of painted English garden wall bond brick, with a slate roof and dentil eaves cornice. The brick stacks are truncated on the right side. The first floor has a decayed two-light small-paned iron casement window below the eaves, with a top left opening light. The ground floor features cross windows with an iron opening light. The doorways are offset to the right, except for the right end cottage, where the doorway was originally on the left but is now blocked. The cottages have cambered header arches, shallow reveals, and no sills, with heavy frames and repaired plank doors. This site is a good rare example of the smaller houses typically found within such courts.
