Description

W H Smith is an early 19th-century building that stands three storeys high and features a three-window front with a curved corner, accessed by a recessed tunnel passage on the right. The building is constructed of yellow brick in Flemish bond and has a hipped slate roof with a low leaded parapet and a dentil cornice above a broad eaves band. The second-floor windows have shallow upper sashes with nine panes, while the passage bay has a similar but narrower window. The brickwork includes gauged brick voussoirs, plain reveals, and stone sills. There is a drainpipe recess to the right of centre, similar to the passage bay. The first floor features a shallow upper sash window with fifteen panes on the right and a multipaned bow window in the style of W H Smith on the left. The ground floor showcases an E Gill style shopfront with a recessed oak entrance and a further recessed lobby at the centre that includes a news stall. The shopfront has transomed windows with small panes in the top lights and brick stallrisers, along with printed tile panels and hanging lanterns. A plain fascia board and blind box are present, along with hanging signs. The main shop area has a flat felt roof with two hipped "deckhouse" windows that have leaded side panes.

Inside, the building features oak floors, shelving, and Kingsway cases, along with plasterwork ceilings that include Tudor motifs and university shields on the walls. An oak staircase with a timber frame effect leads to the first floor, where there is Tudor style plasterwork in the former library room, which currently serves as a house museum.
