Description

This is a three-storey building of the early 20th century, constructed of Ruabon red brick with buff terracotta dressings and a red terracotta plinth. It features steep red tile roofs, plain brick chimneys, and a low leaded parapet with a corniced entablature. A prominent square clock tower rises over the curved corner of the building. Above the tower is a two-stage octagonal cupola with concave sides, slit-like round arched windows, a ribbed lead dome, and pediments over the clock faces. Pilasters mark the corners, and a corniced band runs along the facade. Paired pilasters sweep outwards to form scrolls over buttresses.

The second floor is characterized by paired round arched sash windows with rusticated arches and terracotta pilasters, small panes in the upper sashes. A sill band is present, and flanking brick pilasters descend from the tower through the sill band to ornate brackets. Further paired windows are positioned beyond. The first floor has taller windows flanked by ornate strapwork dedication plaques, with broad tripartite windows beyond a sill band over a plain entablature on convex brackets. A corner doorway is accessed through a rusticated round arch with a nookshaft, a mask to the keystone, pilasters, ornate spandrels featuring putti, a blind fanlight, and six-panel double doors. This doorway is flanked by two-light mullioned windows with oval oculi above, surmounted by swan-necked pediments. Rusticated flat arches define the cross windows beyond. The central bays along the High Street and Severn Street elevations are similar in design.

Ornamental Dutch gables, pilasters and urns are incorporated into the facades, alongside Renaissance motifs around the round arches. Centre pilasters descend to brackets at the sill band, with paired sash windows flanked by smaller windows featuring ornate aprons. The first-floor windows echo the second floor’s design with round arches and a sill band. A modern plate glass window is present on the ground floor of the High Street elevation. A blocked “Dutch” doorcase is visible on the Severn Street elevation, with sash windows positioned to the right. A similar gable end is found on Parker’s Lane. Plain raking gable parapets are evident on the rear elevation along Severn Street. The outer bays of the High and Severn Street elevations showcase round arched sash windows on the second floor and cross windows on the first. A modern shopfront is located on the High Street. A paired round arched first-floor window is set over a bracket on the corner with Parker's Lane; ornate strapwork brackets with masks flank a rusticated, round arched corner doorway featuring medallions in the spandrels.

The Parker’s Lane elevations are plain. A further two-storey, three-window block is situated to the rear, linked by a broad doorway with balusters above. The rear elevations have raking gable parapets.
