Glasshouses in kitchen garden at Gwernyfed High School

The glasshouses in the kitchen garden at Gwernyfed High School are a symmetrical structure featuring a central section that is set forward by 2½ bays and has a canted end. The building has a flagged floor and dentilled eaves, with square-pane glazing and a tall ball finial. On either side of the central section, there are two interconnecting houses, one consisting of 6 sections and the other of 7 sections. The glasshouses are constructed of wood and include decorative cast iron brackets that anchor tension rods. They are equipped with remote-controlled gearing for both roof lights and the top-hung front windows, which can be operated from a boarded walkway that runs over a longitudinal heating duct sunk in the floor. The front glazing is set on cement-rendered brick walls, with glazed double doors at the front of the projecting central section and single doors at the end of the through walkway. Additionally, there is a door at the back of the central section that leads through the garden wall to a lean-to brick-built potting shed, which features a ribbed brick stack that has been reduced in height.
