Description

The Market Hall is an Italianate Gothic building featuring three bay arcades on the ground floor, a stair, and a tall clock tower located on Broad Street, with the hall situated on the first floor. It is constructed of red brick with patterned black brick and painted freestone dressings. The building has rounded angles adorned with animal carvings and layered corbel treatments. The roofs are hipped and covered with slate, featuring over sailing eaves supported by moulded brackets, a chip-carved cill band, and round-headed windows on the first floor. These windows are sashes with glazing bars, stepped reveals, foliage capitals, and pointed voussoir treatment.

The ground floor arcades exhibit similar detailing, with modern shop fronts that are recessed beneath them. A tabernacle with curved corners, finials, and a heraldic shield adds to the decorative elements. The clock tower is tall and topped with a pyramidal slate roof and a weathervane. The clock faces are framed by elaborate ashlar Gothic surrounds, which include spiral colonettes, carved capitals, and punched decoration. At the base, there are double three-panel doors set under a segmental-headed arch, also featuring foliage capitals.
