Description
Bridge 123 over the Montgomeryshire Canal is a Grade II listed structure. The Montgomeryshire Canal was constructed between 1794 and 1797, designed by engineers John and Thomas Dadford, reaching as far as Garthmyl, south of Welshpool. In the 1880s and 1890s, the Shropshire Union Railways and Canal Company undertook significant renovations on the canal, likely resulting in the rebuilding of this bridge as a replica of the original design.
The bridge is made of blue brick and features stone copings on the parapet. It has a single arched span with slightly curving abutments that end in simple piers. The arch is formed by voussoirs and includes an advanced brick 'keystone', while a plain string course marks the base of the parapet. This bridge is noted as a good example of a typical Montgomeryshire Canal Bridge from the late 19th century engineering phase.
