Description
Old Hope Farmhouse is a late 16th century, two-storey farmhouse. It features a timber frame that is enclosed in painted brickwork with stone gables, likely added in the 19th century, although some timber framing remains visible at the rear. The roof is covered with machine-made tiles. The front of the house has three bays, with a narrow bay in the middle that contains the chimney stack. The layout follows a lobby entry plan, and there is a later continuous rear outshut.
The main elevation includes a gabled porch with a boarded door that has a small glazed panel. The windows are timber casements, and there is a brick chimney stack, along with a second stack on the west end gable. The west end features 19th century raking buttresses.
Inside, all the main rooms on the ground floor have deeply chamfered spine and cross beams, as well as chamfered and stopped joists. The first floor is supported by chamfered plates that are pegged to the framing. The posts are jowled, and the roof trusses consist of queen struts and collar beams, with the end trusses featuring raking struts to the heavy principals and short straight wind braces in both end bays. The trusses that define the narrow fire bay were originally closed with wattle and daub, some of which still survives. The roof also has double trenched purlins.
There is a winding stair located in the stair bay outside the main frame, opposite the main stack, with a simple handrail and slightly wavy splat balusters. The main end parlour fireplace includes a multiple moulded fire beam.
