Description
Rhydleos is a three-storey house with a basement, built from uncoursed local shaley stone. The tops of the walls feature about four courses of red brick, and the front of the house is also in red brick, which is block-bonded at the corners into the stonework. It has a double hipped slate roof.
The front elevation, facing south, is symmetrical with three windows, featuring small-pane windows that decrease in height as they rise. The ground storey has sash windows, while the first storey includes one sash window and two cross windows. The second storey is fitted with three-light casement windows. At the center, there is a small arched doorway with unusually narrow double doors.
On the sides, the windows consist of a mix of 16-pane sash windows and small-pane windows, all set within block-bonded freestone surrounds that have arched heads and stone sills. The rear of the house has smaller windows, including some small-pane casements and some four-pane sash windows.
The layout of the enlarged house presents a challenge, balancing the intended symmetrical design with the need to retain the smaller earlier building. The chimney from the earlier structure occupies the space where stairs would typically be, resulting in the stairs being placed forward, with the main front door opening directly onto them. Consequently, the main doors are double and quite small. The main staircase leads to the first floor only and has a steep pitch; access to the second storey of the main part of the house is via a narrow secondary staircase located to one side. Additional stairs serve the kitchen, which is part of the earlier building, and its upper storey, while another short flight of stairs connects this upper storey to the general upper floor of the enlarged house.
The cellar belongs to the enlarged house and features windows on the west side.
