Description

Capel Salem is a chapel dating from 1831, built in roughcast with a stucco plinth, quoins, and window and door dressings. It has a slate roof with simple bargeboards to the gables. The front facade has four bays, with three large sash windows containing 42 panes, set within thin, moulded architraves. A door is positioned between the second and third windows, topped by a moulded architrave, a thin cornice, and a small, curved pediment formed by raised strips. The right side of the chapel has two windows with marginal glazing bars, while the left side features an unpainted cement plaque that reads ‘Salem Addoldy y Bedyddwyr 1831’.

A low, single-storey stable is attached to the left side, constructed in roughcast with a slate roof and featuring a plank door. A two-step mounting block is located beside the stable door. The rear of the chapel has one similar sash window with 42 panes to the right; the left window is obscured by an attached rubble stone range, now largely a private house, but with the ground floor on the left incorporating a vestry.

The interior was refitted in the late 19th century and includes a pulpit placed between the end windows. Wooden shutters are fitted to the windows, and the room boasts a boarded dado, pitch-pine pews arranged in three blocks – two open to one aisle and one to the other – and raked upwards toward the back. A baptismal font is set into the floor, located in front of the chapel entrance, between the main door and the vestry door. Two small blocks flank the pulpit, and a balustraded rail runs along the back of the set fawr. The pulpit itself is panelled with herring-bone boards and features a bookrest supported by pierced brackets; narrow panels on either side display fretwork. A plaster arch is positioned behind the pulpit, enhanced with console brackets and added timber pilasters. The ceiling incorporates a moulded plaster cornice with paired brackets and four plaster roundels.
