Description

The Former Grammar School is a simple Gothic Revival style building dating from the mid-19th century. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and features a slate roof, topped by a spirelet above the entrance. The building consists of a main range with a gabled cross wing to the left and a hipped roofed tower that projects to the right.

The main range is divided into three bays by buttresses, each bay containing a three-light window with steeply arched traceries. There is a continuous string course above the ground floor, and a central upper window, which features paired foiled lancets that are now blocked, is set within a coped gabled dormer that breaks the eaves line. There are also traces of another upper window that has been removed, visible in the left bay. The cross wing on the left has a three-light steeply arched stone traceried window on the ground floor, with paired foiled lancets above the string course and a narrow lancet light in the gable apex. The return elevation features paired banded windows on the ground floor, each with four foiled lancets.

The advanced tower to the right has a tall, tiered window that is now blocked, but fragments of the original tracery can still be seen at the head, set beneath a steep dormer gable. The tower's pyramidal roof is topped with a fleche.

This building is a notable example of a mid-19th century Gothic Revival school situated in an urban context.
