Description
Oldford Cottage is a Grade II listed building, likely dating from the early 17th century. It is said to have been the residence of the town clerk during the 17th century and later served as a prison and a poor house.
The exterior features timber framing with painted brick infill and a slate roof, which has brick gable end stacks. The box-framed structure has regular square panels and some arch bracing. Inside the gable end, a queen post and cambered collar truss are visible. The building has a two-unit plan with a centrally located doorway, which is a plank door with a moulded canopy hood. The flanking windows are small-paned iron casements, and there are similar windows in gabled dormers above. To the left, there is an outbuilding extension that is timber-framed at the rear and has a front elevation of brick painted to imitate timber framing, with some rubble in the gable end. This outbuilding was likely built for agricultural use but now forms part of the house.
Oldford Cottage is noted as a good surviving example of a typical vernacular timber-framed cottage, which is unusual for the town and retains much of its early character.
