Description
Pentre Mill is a small but tall structure with two bays, standing three storeys at the front and two storeys at the rear. It is constructed from large blocks of masonry that are laid randomly and features large stone quoins. The slate roof has been largely reconstructed and includes a fireplace in the northwest corner, indicated by a modern steel flue. The top storey, which has two dormers on both the front and rear, was added later. To the east of the building, the remains of a wheel pit can be seen, along with a well-preserved culverted tail race that has a stone arched top.
The openings on the front of the mill are mostly in their original positions, while those at the rear have been altered. The front door is slightly off centre, made of planked wood with a small light, set within a plain wooden doorcase and accessed by two steps. The door lintel slopes down significantly to the west, suggesting that there may have once been a wider door. There are two small wooden casement windows on the ground floor, one on the first floor, and two dormer windows, each containing tripartite casements with plastered gables that have two diagonal struts. The rear is accessed by a modern doorway at first floor level, which has a planked door with one light, and a new window opening with a tripartite wooden casement window to the west. The dormers at the rear match those at the front. The west gable end features a window on both the first and second storeys, while the east gable has a planked door below. Evidence exists of a former buttress that would have projected from the northeast corner of the mill across the wheel race.
The roof purlins are original, but the remainder of the roof has been rebuilt. It is said that the roof once contained the remains of crucks. Inside, there are some original window lintels and corbels, and a hooded fireplace in the northwest corner that is said to have had a twisted wattle chimney. No mill machinery or fittings remain, but there are some sockets that may relate to them. The interior features a modern staircase and partitions.
