Description
The Old Courthouse is a house made up of four ranges and two lean-tos that were built at different times. The oldest part is a prominent single unit range located to the northwest, which has a rear wing that may also date back to early origins to the northeast. To the southwest, there is a secondary range, likely added in the 18th century, with a parallel range from the 19th century to the southeast. The gable end of the northwest range features exposed close studded timber framing, a jettied and moulded gable bressumer, and a small four-pane iron casement window below. A masonry lean-to, possibly a pig sty, obscures much of the lower storey, but diagonal struts suggesting a chevron design and a slightly jettied mid rail can be seen on the west side. The west and south elevations of this range have been refaced in masonry and recently repointed. Above a plain, planked door with a simple paned overlight, there is a small-pane iron casement window. The southwest range is built of large random rubble and features an external masonry stack and a small lean-to porch on the west side. The southeast range is constructed of brickwork, likely from the 19th century, and includes a modern door in the south gable and a brick end stack. The northeast range, dating from the 18th century, has a steeply pitched roof and a brick ridge stack. Where it connects to the northwest range, there is an area of box framing with brick nogging that may relate to the original structure, along with a curious fragment of a shallow roof line above it. Most of the remaining windows are modern casements, some set under segmental arches with voussoirs and others under flat arches with gauged brick heads. The building was not accessible at the time of inspection in February 1996.
