Description

Mellington Gatehouse is a symmetrical, Gothic-style gatehouse built in the 19th century, featuring three bays and two storeys. It is constructed from rock-faced, grey random masonry with sandstone dressings and has an asbestos tile roof with two sandstone ridge stacks, one on each end bay. The central bay includes a gateway beneath a four-centred arch, topped by a steeply pitched coped gable. Flanking the gateway are two smaller pedestrian passageways, each adorned with ornate cast iron gates. The central gable features stone coping and a finial, with an inscribed coat of arms under a hood mould that reads 'Pax et harmonica'. On either side of the central gable are cast iron brackets designed to support lanterns.

The outer bays have gabled fronts and canted bay windows with pierced parapets. Above each bay window is a two-light window under a hood mould, along with a small trefoiled light in the gable apex. All windows are designed as trefoil-headed lancets. The sides of the gatehouse include small lean-tos with string courses.

The rear of the gatehouse mirrors the front, but the canted bay windows have been replaced with triple light windows, each containing trefoil-headed lancets, and there is a window in the gabled pediment. The lean-to sections feature modern windows.

Access to the interior was not available at the time of inspection in January 1996.
