Description
Fir Court is a 17th-century building with an unusual plan that features two cross wings and a short central range, creating a symmetrical entrance bay at both the front and rear. The building has a lobby entry plan, three windows across the front, and two full storeys. It is timber-framed with a tiled roof, a central red brick chimney stack, and a smaller chimney stack on the east side. The timber framing consists of box framing with plaster panels, except above the gable bressumers where decorative cross braces are present. Some of the timber framing has been replaced or covered with render at the rear and on the lower storey of the front elevation.
The east gable is constructed of coursed masonry and features a central window on each storey. An inscription in relief on the front gable bressumer of the west cross wing reads:
"What is here by man erected: it be by God protected: John Middleton: Gent: An: Do: 1685: Aetatis. Suae 27: RTC."
The building has plain barge boards topped with finials at both the front and rear. The modern front door is a six-panelled design located within a modern glazed porch. The front elevation includes wooden casement windows with nine panes on the lower storey and six panes on the upper storey. At the rear, there is a modern porch with a lean-to roof and open timber work surrounding a modern four-panelled door. The rear windows are modern casements in various styles. Additionally, there is a small rendered lean-to at the west end with an asbestos corrugated roof and a planked door at the front.
Access to the interior was not available at the time of inspection, as the house was unoccupied. The masonry east end, along with its small chimney, suggests that the service area was located in the east bay.
