Description
Fir Court Stables is a Grade II listed building consisting of two ranges set at right angles, both with one storey and a hay loft. The longer east-west range is timber-framed and timber-clad, topped with a corrugated asbestos sheet roof. The shorter north-south range is built of coursed masonry under a tiled roof, with the western side having been partially rebuilt.
On the south side of the main range, there are four sets of stable doors. Above these doors, but not directly aligned, are four hatched openings leading into the hay loft. Additionally, there is an opening into the hay loft on the east elevation. The rear (south) side of the stone range features one hatched opening into the hay loft, which is set under a segmental brick arch. The west elevation of the masonry range has been modified with the addition of a rough concrete lintel, likely to allow for the enlargement of windows flanking a stable door that may be in its original position. These openings originally contained 6-pane casement windows, which are now blocked. The north elevation of the stables has fewer openings, with a total of three doors, as it faced away from the farm and lacks access to the hay loft. There is a small extension made of masonry and timber cladding, featuring a cat slide roof. The northeast corner of the masonry range has brick quoins, possibly for structural support.
At the time of inspection in February 1996, there was no access to the interior, but it is said to contain simple tie-beam trusses.
