Description

The Court House Inn is an inn built with two ranges positioned at right angles, dating from an unspecified period. It stands two storeys tall with hipped roofs and features two cross-axial stacks that contain triple shafts. The front range has three bays, a central doorway, and sidelights, suggesting it was originally designed with a lobby entry plan. The shorter side range also has a central door located beneath the chimney. At the rear, there is a 20th-century lean-to behind the front range.

The front elevation and the side range are constructed from random masonry, featuring substantial blocks of grey stone. The rear, above the lean-to, and the upper half of the north gable of the front range are made of light timber framing with brick nogging. The windows have stone sills and wedge lintels, with modern casement windows that respect the original positions of the bays, along with modern doors.

Inside, the corner bay between the two ranges contains two substantial spine beams with deep chamfers and cut stops. A doorway cut through to the central bay of the front range reveals evidence of a sub-medieval partition, with sockets for panels and wattles. The central and north bay are open plan, and the chimney piece in the front range has been removed, while the chimney piece in the side range remains, although the fireplace has been rebuilt. There is also exposed light timber framing between the south range and the lean-to.
