Description
Melyniog-fach is a much-enlarged house, dating from the 18th century and later, situated within private grounds. The house began as an L-shaped building facing south, to which an early two-storey addition was made to the west, and a more recent single-storey extension to the east. The original core part of the house is slightly raised above a gravelled forecourt and garden, and remains visually distinct due to a subtle difference in brick colour. This original section comprises a two-storey front range and a three-storey rear wing. The external brickwork is light red, except for the gable of the rear wing which is constructed of uncoursed local grey stone. The roof is slate, with projecting eaves, ridges, and hips finished in lead, and end chimneys located on both the main range and the rear wing. The south-facing garden elevation has three windows on each floor: the upper storey features 16-pane hornless sash windows framing a central 12-pane hornless sash window, all set within openings with slightly cambered brick arches and stone sills. The lower storey fenestration has been altered, now featuring large canted side bay windows flanking a porch with steps and low side walls. Stone details include cornices for the porch and bay windows, window piers and sills, and wall copings. A lean-to porch and extension at the rear incorporates access to the newer extension. Several small windows are visible on the rear and side elevations, including three which retain the characteristic diagonally crossed glazing bars typical of the local area; one of these windows has a date scratched into the glass. A small, span-roofed shed is located at the rear.
The west wing is an early addition constructed of a slightly lighter coloured brick. This wing is also L-shaped, with the same height as the original core but a more compact design. Its front elevation consists solely of windows: two 12-pane hornless sash windows on each of the upper and lower floors. An irregular side elevation incorporates two chimneys, a lean-to, and a lean-to glasshouse. The rear wing of this section has a lower roofline and features a door with an overlight, a steel window, and a 16-pane hornless sash window above a smaller-paned window.
A 20th-century single-storey wing, constructed in red brickwork with a hipped slate roof, extends to the right. This wing features sash windows on the front and metal sliding windows to a garden terrace. The interior of the house was not accessible for inspection.
