Description
Rhiew is a well-preserved building constructed of brick laid in garden wall bond, which has replaced the original framing except for the shed on the north gable end. It features a slate roof, a boarded door, and timber windows with small-pane iron casements set in openings with cambered brick arches.
The interior remains unmodernised, with the hall (cegin) showcasing a flagged floor and paired chamfered spine beams with ogee stops. The stack, which was likely originally timber framed but has been replaced with brick, includes shaped settles on each side and a cast iron range with a crane above. An oven is located beside the stack, accessible from the wash-house or bakehouse at the rear. The stair, situated behind the stack, is enclosed in a horizontal boarded enclosure. The parlour features a raised timber floor that continues from one of the spine beams. The service room, which may have been a dairy or pantry, has a lowered floor, a slate worktop, and a sink. The stair and upper floor date from around 1840 when the eaves were raised to create attic accommodation. The original roof truss, preserved in the animal house, consists of a tie with three struts to the collar and raking struts to the principals.
