Description
Upper Cwm-y-ddalfa is a building featuring timber framing with small square panels, which has been refurbished and coated with pebbledash. This is applied on vertical lathing over weatherboarding on the southwest end. The roof is slate, with brick axial and end wall stacks. The windows and doors were replaced in the 1940s and 1950s. There is a central gabled open porch that covers a part-glazed door. The building has metal windows and timber casement windows on the upper floor, along with 18-pane sash windows on the east front of the wing. The gable end of the wing jetties out and has a prominent datestone that reads G E H / 1736. At the north end of the main range, there is a very large external stone stack with offsets, and the main range has a small lean-to at the rear.
Inside, a lobby leads to a living room on the left (south) and a service room on the right. Most of the interior framing, panelling, and detail are present but now covered up. There is a divided stair, likely inserted in the 18th century, featuring a simple stick balustrade. The ceiling joists are chamfered, some with pyramid stops, and are supported on chamfered posts of unknown date in the hall and service room. The service room contains a very large open fireplace with an oven. It is said that the west room of the wing is panelled beneath the current finishes.
