Description

Gellidywyll is a building that was originally timber framed, with the outer wall framing replaced with stone in the 18th century, while the main posts remain. It has slate roofs. The central entrance features a glazed door that is raised well above the roadway and is sheltered by an open timber framed porch added in 1907. The building has six-paned timber cross windows, with one on the first floor retaining large leaded lights in an iron casement. The rear wing includes a very large lateral stack, which is separately gabled to the east. Its eastern wall extends under a lean-to and has a further gable stack, all likely added in the 19th century. There is a cellar beneath the western bay, which previously had external accesses. A date stone on the western end gable displays a shield and the inscription "RESTORATA / 19 D.W.S.07."

Inside, a square hallway occupies the central bay, featuring a fine dog-leg flying stair from around 1720 to 1740, which has three turned oak balusters for each elm tread. To the left is a living kitchen, with twin deeply chamfered spine beams that have bold ogee stops and timber framed cross partitions. To the right of the hall, an 18th-century two-panelled door leads to the parlour, which includes further 18th-century joinery. A door at the rear of the hall leads to the former kitchen, which has a very large lateral stack and a fire beam above. The second bay of the wing was remodeled around 1907. The roof features large scantling cruck-like principal rafters, which may have originally been full crucks but are now raised on substantial tie beams. These rafters have pegged mortices for arch braces to the collars, and the central bay is smoke blackened from a former open fire.
