Description

Upper Fawnog is a mid to late 17th century timber-framed building with brick noggings, which has largely been re-faced with rendered masonry and features a slate roof. It has one storey and an attic, consisting of two bays and follows a type C lobby entry plan with a central two-storey porch and a cross wing at the southwest end.

The porch is notable for being open at the sides, with post and panelled sides and seats. Inside, there is a chamfered spine beam with cut stops and exposed joists. The upper level jetties out on brackets, which have been renewed. The bressumer is ovolo-cavetto moulded, with its face carved with double arcs containing line engraved lilies. The corner posts are also carved, with a rampant lion on the right and an undeciphered figure on the left. The mid-wall bressumer features studs below that are carved with balusters in low relief, and above, there are incuse lozenge patterns.

The main entrance to the house has a boarded door with a square light. To the right bay, there is a rendered wall with a 19th to 20th century secondary door. The left bay contains a three-light window and a raised dormer with a timber-framed gable. The cross wing beyond has a gable with herringbone framing and a door on the ground floor. The northeast end is also rendered to tie level, with a herringbone timbered gable above. The roof is a double purlin type. The rear elevation is made of stone and has two 20th century windows in the main rooms, while the cross wing is constructed of brick and includes a lean-to oven.

Inside the main rooms, there are double chamfered spine beams with widely spaced joists. The fireplace in the left chamber features a high firebeam, while the fireplace in the right room is not exposed.
