Description
Bryn Mawr Farmhouse is a 17th and early 18th century timber-framed black and white farmhouse featuring three bays with a 4-6-4 panel arrangement. At the west end, there is a two-storey granary and store made of red brick with nogging. The eastern service bay was likely rebuilt in the early 18th century and follows a Type C lobby entry plan.
The farmhouse has three panels high on stone footings, supported by a heavy mid-wall bressumer, with narrower panels above. The walls were later raised by adding a panel, which reduced the roof pitch. The original wattle and lath and daub have been replaced with whitewashed brick noggings. The west gable displays collar and diagonal decorative bracing, with original wattle and daub protected by the granary. The roof was re-formed to a lower pitch when the walls were raised, which cut off the original principal rafters. There are various timber windows, including two iron-framed casements on the south side and a leaded window with early glass on the north side, all located at first floor level. The eastern service bay appears to be rebuilt with lighter framing, and a gabled framed weatherboarded porch has been added. The eastern gable is made of later brick. The heavier early framing features assembly marks made with a gouge, while the later framing has marks made using a 20mm chisel.
Inside, the central living hall has chamfered cross beams with ogee stops. There is an original open hearth with an oven that has been blocked by a later fireplace. A post and panel partition separates the inner room, which has a chamfered spine beam and joists. The service room to the east of the stack has a slightly chamfered spine beam and a stair on the north wall. The granary contains two unequal store rooms on the ground floor, one of which is paved with stone slate, and there is a ladder stair leading to the upper level.
