Description
Burgedin Farmhouse is a 17th-century building with external framing at the front that has been re-assembled using some second-hand timbers. It features a boarded door within a 20th-century framed gabled porch and timber 3-light windows.
The original house is defined by five cruck frames, with the apex formed by a short king post rising from a high collar that supports the ridge, while the end couples stop at a high collar for a quarter-hipped roof. The central truss has an arch-braced collar, and the knee braces are chamfered. The walls have been heightened, and the purlins lifted, which has removed the original windbraces. There is a full post and panel partition in the inner room, with doors at both ends, all framed into the crucks. The flooring above is supported by two chamfered spine beams in each hall bay, with the northwest bay significantly reduced in width due to the insertion of a stack. The inner room has a central partition supported by a haunched post, which is still intact. Evidence found during restoration indicates the presence of trimming for ladder access to a solar chamber. The service bay has been restored but does not have a floor, and there is a late gable stack.
