Description
The Hollies is a detached house dating from the earlier 19th century. It is constructed of rubble stone, with a red brick top floor and a brick end-wall stack. The roof is covered with modern concrete tiles. The house has three storeys and is arranged with three bays. The top floor has three square 12-pane sash windows, while the ground and first floors have 16-pane sash windows with stone sills and cambered brick heads. A brick gabled porch with a six-panel door, the top four panels glazed, sits centrally at the entrance. The north gable shows signs of the original roofline, while the south gable has a modern window on each side of the ground floor and a small-paned iron two-light window to the attic. An earlier 19th-century extension is located to the rear southwest, built with brick walls and a slate roof.
A retaining wall of large irregular blocks of green stone runs along the front, featuring a coping and iron railings consisting of four plain horizontal rails with plain uprights. There are 15 sections of railings to the left of the gate and four to the right. A tall 19th-century iron gate has circular uprights with fleur-de-lys finials and scroll tops to the outer uprights, completed with dog bars.
Inside, the entrance hall contains six-panel fielded-panelled doors at the base of an oak staircase with straight balusters. The south room has a plaster panelled ceiling with two beams encased in moulded plaster. The north room features an exposed square ceiling beam and joists. The three front rooms on the first floor are decorated with stencilled patterns directly on the plaster. The room on the north side has a dark blue border around a doorway, featuring repeated patterns of flowers, leaves, and stars, and a dense floral pattern – possibly peonies – on each wall, with the border applied around each opening. The landing area above the entrance has a dense grid of ivy leaves with a gold guilloche-style border on a dark background. The room on the left has a less distinct floral pattern in blue.
