Description
The Alpha Presbyterian Church is a building dating from the late 19th century, constructed in a free Gothic style with Perpendicular detailing. The building is faced in snecked bull-nosed local grey stone with contrasting smooth bathstone dressings, and has a purple slate roof with red copings. The long facade faces north onto The Groe, while the gabled entrance front faces west. A distinctive tapering tower, constructed in grey stone and topped with contrasting bathstone square turrets and pierced screens, is a prominent feature. The upper stage of the tower has three-light windows, while horizontal bands and small trefoil windows are set in cream limestone. A two-light perpendicular window is present with banding at sill level. Below this is a bathstone panel bearing the inscription 'Alpha'. To the left of the tower is a gable leading to an adjoining schoolroom. The first floor features a square-headed window of four trefoiled ogee lights, while the ground floor has a broad six-light window with Perpendicular style tracery under a three-centred arch. The entrance doorway to the school features a three-centred arch, with a window above set at eaves level. To the right of the tower, a projecting gabled bay has a multi-light perpendicular window at first floor level and a square-headed window on the ground floor. This bay is flanked at first floor level by two two-light windows set under eaves with Perpendicular tracery and three-centred heads, one window to the left and two to the right. The ground floor windows are square headed with trefoiled ogees. The entrance front has a steep gable with sides splayed back to join the main body of the chapel. The gable is finished with bathstone coping and kneelers; in the apex is a tiny two-light window with bands, a large multiple-light perpendicular style window to the first floor, and a shallow porch with two square-headed doors under a three-centred arch. The arch has a painted surround and relief decoration including a book inscribed 'Ye Must Be Born Again', together with the dates 1747 and 1903. Each side of the porch has a bathstone parapet and two identical windows consisting of three trefoil ogee lights under square heads, with buttresses marking the junctions where the porch splays meet the main chapel.
Inside, the entrance doors lead into a lobby with a pair of wooden stairs leading to a gallery. The lobby is divided from the chapel by a wooden screen containing stained glass. The chapel itself features a high, polygonal boarded roof supported on iron columns with bell capitals, which rise from the gallery. The trusses of the roof have pierced decoration in a Gothic style. A continuous gallery has a solid balustrade with Gothic panelling on all four sides and is steeply banked up to the west and east ends. At the east end is a large organ set within a Gothic arch, and a wide, semi-circular pulpit is located within a 'Set Fawr' enclosure. The interior also includes varnished pine seating and panelling, as well as a stone font. The building incorporates schoolrooms, vestries and service rooms, making the most of the restricted site.
