Description
The building is a barn, cartshed, and granary range at Upper House, dating from the 17th century. It features a timber frame that is two panels high, weatherboarded, and has a slate roof set on low stone walls. The barn consists of three bays, with the wall plate raised one panel on the south side to create an asymmetrical roof. The eastern truss has a deep tie beam and three queen struts to the collar, with taking struts to the principal rafters that support a single tier of purlins; a second tier was added when the south wall was raised. The center bay is wider and is divided equally by an inserted central truss, likely added when the south wall was heightened. This truss bears graffiti that reads "R TB AN(no) DO(mini) 1698" along with names of various 19th and 20th-century owners. A timber feeding trough is attached to this truss. The barn has three doors and shuttered lights, with a second level of small pitched doors under the eaves. The wall panels were originally woven panels on staves for the upper panel, while the lower panel has grooved studs, likely for solid timber panels. At the eastern end, there is an added two-bay open-fronted cartshed with a store or granary above. This structure is timber framed with a stone gable wall, featuring light timber framing with brick noggings and a corrugated asbestos roof. Access to the upper level is provided by an external stair at the rear.
