Description
6 Smithfield Street is a three-storey terrace of industrial housing, likely built around 1830. It originally included a small woolen factory on the top floor. The building features a two-window arrangement for No 3, which was probably the manager's house, and a one-window arrangement for the other units, creating reflected pairs. The exterior is roughcast with a painted plinth. It has a renewed slate roof with mostly rendered brick chimney stacks and wide boarded eaves. The terrace retains some small pane sash windows, with 9 and 12-pane configurations throughout Nos 3 and 5. There are later half-glazed doors and two small windows on the left end, which once had a weaving loft door leading to the gable. The rear of the building has modern windows, and No 3 is shallower than the others. A high revetment wall is located beyond the building, adjacent to the former castle mound.
