Description
20 China Street is a Grade II listed building featuring a two-window rendered front for No 19 and a one-window roughcast front for No 20, both with a plinth. The building has a slate roof that is hipped at the left end, wide boarded eaves, and modern brick chimney stacks. No 19 has recently inserted 16-pane sash windows, while No 20 has sash windows without glazing bars. The entrance features a twinned doorcase with an overall cornice, which has been altered and enlarged during conversion; No 19 has Tuscan columns, and No 20 has square piers, both supporting 6-panel half-glazed doors (No 19 also includes a panelled fanlight). There is a blocked-up doorway that once led to a shop, and a two-light cellar window to the left below the grate. The left corner is chamfered, and the left end is slate hung. On the right gable, there is a splayed bay window with fluted pilasters and 4-pane sashes, along with a small railed terrace on the corner. The building aligns with the street line, featuring a gable end at a splayed angle and additional sash windows set into the slope. The slate hung rear of No 19 is splayed back to the right, showcasing a gable and a 36-pane sash staircase window.
The interiors date from the 19th century and are largely retained; No 20 includes asymmetrically carved timber balusters on the staircase and a coloured marble fireplace in the room with the bay window.
