Description
19 China Street is a building dating from the 19th century. It is composed of two dwellings, Nos. 19 and 20, which were originally built as a pair. The front of No. 19 is rendered, while No. 20 has a roughcast finish. Both have a plinth. The roof is slate, with a hipped end on the left side, wide boarded eaves, and modern brick chimney stacks. No. 19 has recently installed 16-pane sash windows, whereas No. 20 has sashes without glazing bars. A shared doorcase, featuring an overall cornice, was altered and enlarged when the building was converted. No. 19 has Tuscan columns, while No. 20 has square piers, both supporting 6-panel half-glazed doors. No. 19 also features a panelled fanlight. A doorway has been blocked up, likely indicating a former shop entrance. A 2-light cellar window is located to the left, below a grate. The corner to the left is chamfered, and the left end is slate hung. A splayed bay window with fluted pilasters is situated on the right gable, incorporating 4-pane sashes and a small railed terrace on the corner. The building continues along the street line, with a gable end set into the slope at a splayed angle, with further sash windows. The rear of No. 19 is slate hung and splayed to the right with a gable and a 36-pane sash staircase window.
Original 19th-century interiors are retained. No. 20 contains an asymmetrical, carved timber balustrade to the staircase and a coloured marble fireplace in the room with the bay window.
