Description

Cwm-mule Mill is a three-storey building with a four-window range, constructed from random rubble masonry and topped with a slate roof featuring stone gable end stacks. At the western end, there is the miller’s cottage, while the eastern end has another cottage, which is a low two-storey range built with similar materials and includes a gable stack. All door and window openings are adorned with stone, voussoired heads. The windows are 20th-century wooden casements with small panes.

The miller’s cottage features a 20th-century iron and timber-clad porch and door, along with three windows on its western side, one for each storey. The mill itself has a wide, central planked door at ground level, and at first floor level, there are two doorways: one at the western end with stable doors and another between the central and eastern windows with a plain planked door. The window to the left of the ground floor doorway has been blocked with masonry. The small cottage to the east has a door and window on the ground floor, plus two windows just below the eaves.

The western end of the building has no openings, and there are no openings at the eastern end above the lower range. At the rear, the miller’s cottage has a window for each storey, similar to the front. The mill has three windows on each storey, with wooden three-light casements, except for the ground floor windows, which are boarded. There are two ground floor doorways matching the positions of the first-floor doorways on the front, both featuring stable-type doors. In the centre of the rear elevation, there is a wide segmental pointed arch with voussoirs that has been blocked; this was the tail race for the water wheel.

Access to the interior was not available at the time of inspection. The position of the tail race arch indicates that the wheel was located inside the mill, but no machinery is reported to have survived.
