Description

This is a long, symmetrical, two-storey, three-window-range building, likely dating from the 18th century, constructed with large blocks of coursed stone and covered by a slate roof with stone end stacks. The building demonstrates group value from its contribution to the surrounding area. A central entrance features a half-panelled door with an overlight, set within a trellis porch with a flat, leaded roof and a round-arched entrance. The wide, sixteen-pane hornless sash windows have flat stone voussoir heads, while the upper-storey windows have timber lintels. The south gable end has no openings, while a stone lean-to, formerly a 19th-century dairy, adjoins the north gable end. This lean-to contains a 20th-century planked door and a two-light wooden casement to the west, and a small window to the north, all under a continuous timber lintel.

The rear of the building includes two adjoining gabled kitchen wings with details characteristic of the late 19th century; the gable walls have been partially rebuilt using red brick. A rear entrance is in the left return of the left wing, featuring a 20th-century half-glazed wooden door and a two-light wooden casement, both with segmental brick heads. The upper floor has a matching two-light casement and a small light. The right return of the south wing has a 20th-century two-light wooden casement, above which is a gabled half-dormer with a similar window. An outshut, partially constructed from red brick, extends to the right of the wings and incorporates a 20th-century three-light window, a small casement, and a blocked opening.

Wrought iron railings are attached to the front of the house and enclose a small garden. They feature alternating twisted and plain uprights with fleur-de-lis finials, standing on a brick and slate plinth. A single gate is located to the left of centre, opening onto a path to the front door, while double gates are situated to the right. Posts adjacent to the gates are topped with urn finials. The railings connect to the churchyard wall on the right and curve to join the house on the left.

Inside, the central stair hall is flanked by reception rooms, accessed by six-panel doors. An open-well staircase is positioned to the right, featuring turned balusters, newels, and a moulded handrail. The main reception room to the left has a wide stone fireplace with a substantial timber lintel; a spine beam with a shallow chamfer runs across the ceiling. The parlour to the right of the stair hall includes a plastered spine beam, a moulded dado rail, and a small decorative marble fireplace, and is said to have a cellar beneath. The kitchen occupies the two rear wings, arranged in an open-plan layout. The earlier left wing contains an old fireplace with a timber lintel, a spine beam with a shallow chamfer, and plain joists. The right wing has a brick fireplace with a flat-arched head. The upper storey was not inspected, but the staircase is reportedly continued to an attic, where the roof trusses have tie-beams and collars.
