Description

Glyn Clywedog is a large house of three window ranges, two storeys high with attics, built in random stone on a high stone plinth. It has a slate roof with stone end stacks and large quoins to the right-hand end. A wide central entrance originally formed part of a gate passage, now with a round-arched head of stone voussoirs and a continuous chamfer. This archway is now infilled with a late 20th-century boarded door flanked by side lights with margin glazing, above which is a fanlight. The house has late 20th-century wooden windows with opening casements; those to the ground floor may have been enlarged and have lintels of stone blocks. Three-light windows flank the archway, with a two-light window on the upper storey to the left. Three large gabled dormers with box panelling project from the attic, featuring slightly jettied gables supported on brackets with diagonal struts, plain bargeboards, and slate-hung sides, each containing a two-light window matching those elsewhere. The east gable end has single-light windows flanking the chimney breast. A full-length lean-to stone porch extends from the ground floor, containing a half-glazed door to the left. The west gable end has no openings.

Adjoining the rear southeast angle of the main house is a kitchen block with a box-panelled front elevation, formerly lime-washed, and containing a two-light casement window to each storey. It has a stone gable end with a cross-window to each storey. The rear of the kitchen block features a lateral stone stack and a large stone lean-to porch, probably from the late 20th century, with split doors to the left-hand return. The north elevation of the kitchen is close-studded, and in the angle with the main range is a tall gabled staircase projection, added later, which is box-panelled and slightly jettied to each storey. Steps lead down to a doorway, with a two-light window at mid-level and a wide window with stained glass in the attic. A further block, partly of red brick, extends to the rear of the main range, containing a window with a flat-arched head of gauged brickwork. This is probably from the late 18th century and may relate to the blocking of the original gate passage. This rear block was significantly altered and refenestrated in the mid-20th century and has two large gables clad in corrugated iron and metal-framed windows, along with various lean-to additions to the ground floor.

The former gate passage, now used as a dining room, is blocked at the rear but retains a fine timber-framed archway. The side walls feature good close studding, and the ceiling has three stop-chamfered cross-beams supported on brackets. Reception rooms on the left and right of the gate passage were not inspected. Behind the left-hand room is a passage leading to a fine open-well oak staircase, featuring moulded balusters, a handrail, and very wide treads. The kitchen unit has two deeply chamfered cross-beams. Other details include good oak floors and doors. The upper storey is said to contain 17th-century wainscot panelling.
