Description
Malthouse Cottage is a building with square panel timber framing situated between stone gable walls. Originally one storey and attic, it has been raised to two storeys. The frame consists of three panels high, extended upwards by one additional panel, and features colourwashed brick infill panels. The timber framing is exposed at the rear, which faces the churchyard. There are doorways between the two left-hand units and against the right-hand gable, along with small two-light casement windows.
The layout was apparently modified in the early 19th century to create a central passage-hall with a staircase leading to the rear. Inside, there are twin parallel chamfered spine beams. A secondary door now leads to the kitchen in the left bay and opens against the stack, which has a heavily cambered fire lintel inscribed with the scratch inscription "HIXI." The internal timber frame retains its original markings of lines and circles. The earlier roof structure is preserved in a partition on the right side of the central bay and features a collar with raking struts to the principals.
