Description

Efail Fach Cottage is a timber-framed cottage, likely dating from the 17th century, though with significant alterations and rebuilding in the 18th and 19th centuries. The front wall is timber-framed with square panels. The cross wing, and possibly the rear of the main range, were rebuilt in brick around 1850, with the exception of the front gable of the cross wing, which remains timber-framed. The timber framing is filled with painted brick. The main range is defined by two bays, marked by continuous vertical posts. The apex of the cross wing's gable features a queen post and collar strut truss. The cross wing has 2-light casement windows on each floor, a stack to the rear of the entrance, and a gabled timber porch with a chamfered archway and 2-light casement windows on each floor, including an upper window in a gabled dormer. The right-hand bay is a reconstruction of a former shop; originally a low building with a doorway and small window, it now features a 3-light casement window and a dormer that aligns with the main range's roofline. Previously leaded windows now have bracketed hoods, a detail characteristic of work carried out on the Vaynor Estate in the mid-19th century. A brick axial stack with clustered octagonal shafts also dates from this period. The porch and dormer gables have scalloped bargeboards, adding to the mid-19th century detailing.
