Description

The Old School House is a building dating from the 18th century, originally constructed as a school and now partly a community centre and partly a private residence. It is built of roughly coursed and squared stone with a slate roof and brick stacks. The building is two storeys high and symmetrically designed, featuring projecting outer wings and a two-window range between them.

The left-hand wing, now the Old School House, has a doorway set within an ashlar porch. The doorway is framed by a four-centred archway with a hood mould and traceried overlight. A two-light casement window with a transom window sits alongside the porch and is framed by a painted stone architrave with curved upper lights. Similar casement windows are found above and within the gable of this wing, which also features a small attic window, moulded kneelers to the copings, and a finial.

The right-hand wing, originally the school, has a former school entrance in a segmental archway on its inner side. The gable end of this wing has mullioned windows with round-headed lights (four to the ground floor, two above). An inscription plate recording the history of the school is positioned in the gable apex. More recent additions have been made to the right-hand return, replacing earlier extensions to the school accommodation.

The rear elevation, which faces the churchyard, displays a single window on each floor in the gabled wing, and a three-window range to the Old School House. All these windows are two-light mullions set within chamfered painted stone architraves, with arched heads to the lights.
