Description
The Presbyterian Chapel is a building constructed from red brick with a Breidden dolerite rear wall, accompanied by a red stone manse and slate roofs, with the manse having a lower pitch. The central entrance features a porch and is flanked by round-headed windows with iron frames and cast glass. The northern gable was rebuilt around 1900-1910, during which the porch was also added. This porch has a round-arched opening with flush bead panelled doors, corner pilasters, and limestone dressing with an entablature. Above the porch, there is a limestone-framed date stone. The manse, which is a single bay added probably in 1839, has a flushed door in a moulded frame and a 16-pane sash window on the ground floor, with a 9-pane window above. At the rear of the chapel, a schoolroom was added at a lower level, leading directly into the Sunday school hall set at right angles. Both spaces feature two-centred door openings with framed and boarded doors, and the hall has two-light timber windows with hopper vents, all margin glazed. The forecourt is enclosed by spear-headed railings between monolithic stone piers.
Inside the chapel, the walls are lined and painted, featuring pilasters that rise from triple small corbels above a timber boarded dado. There is a simple moulded cornice and a central ceiling rose. The pews are arranged in three blocks with two aisles, and there is a panelled pine reading desk. In 1994, the pews and organ were moved from their original positions. The ceiling sustained cracks due to an earthquake around 1985.
