Description
Ivy House is a house built around 1820 that overlooks the Montgomeryshire Canal. It is constructed of brick, with some rubble on the rear elevation facing the street, and features a slate roof with gable end stacks, partly rebuilt in the late 19th century with yellow brick bands. The main range has a lower wing that is offset to the west, which may be a later addition but was present by 1854. The entrance is located on the street side in a porch that projects from the offset wing, positioned at the angle with the main range. The door has margin-light glazing above a fanlight. The street front includes two tripartite sash windows on the ground floor, which were inserted in the early 20th century, and a canted oriel window on the first floor, featuring stained glass in the lower lights. There are also two 16-pane sash windows with fine gauged brick heads on the return elevation to the west.
The main front faces the canal and features a central entrance beneath a projecting storeyed porch with a round-arched window beneath its gable. The door has margin-light glazing in the upper panels and is surrounded by a reeded architrave, flanked by 16-pane sash windows, including a floor-length window to the right. An ornate cast-iron veranda extends along the length of the house on either side of the porch. The upper floors have similar windows, with 8-pane sashes in the upper storey. The lower wing to the left has a hipped roof and a large canted bay window on its south-facing gable, with small-paned iron casement windows on its inner face.
Inside, the house retains its original layout, featuring a central stair hall with principal rooms opening off it. The main sitting room in the offset wing boasts an ornate, deeply moulded plaster ceiling cornice and rose. Ivy House maintains much of its original character, with the main south elevation particularly notable for the quality of the ironwork veranda.
