Description

The outbuildings attached to the west of Downton Farmhouse are possibly from the 17th century, with the rear portion being the earliest part. The parallel ranges at the south end date from the 19th century. The structure is two storeys high, primarily built of coursed rubble from different phases. The north end features some 18th-century brickwork, while the south front has a first floor made of 19th-century brick with ashlar dressings. The roofs are covered with slate and stone tiles, and there are three tall brick chimneys.

The open timber porch has chamfered posts and a slate roof, leading to a framed plank door with an overlight. The front windows are tall two-light casements with chamfered frames and large panes. The side windows are mainly three-light metal-framed casements from the 19th century, set under diaper brickwork and cambered lintels. There is also a framed plank side door beneath a similar lintel.

The outbuildings are located on the adjoining west side of the house and form an L-plan range. They are weather-boarded and have a stone tile roof, with a heavy beamed interior. The interior features a large flagstone floor throughout, and the rear portion has chamfered beams and possibly some timber framing. There is a dairy with a salting slab, a kitchen that includes a large fireplace and a bread oven, a thick slate window cill, and back stairs leading to the former granary and men's quarters.
