Description

71 Acton Gate is a neo-vernacular style building dating from the 18th century. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical 4-window arrangement, with projecting gabled wings. Entrances are set back within short, hipped-roofed wings, each featuring a recessed porch with a round-arched entrance, the roof above being swept down from the hipped gable. The gabled ranges include canted bay windows with slate roofs on the lower level, and renewed 3-light casement windows above, set within original openings. A central range between the gables features a roof sweep carried on chamfered and braced timber posts over a verandah. French doors are located in the return of a gabled cross wing, and casement windows are in the main range. Long, 4-light dormer windows are present in the roof. Attached to the entrance wings are garage extensions, likely adapted from original outbuildings and matching the detail of the main building. The building is constructed with roughcast render over brick, and has grey slate roofs, with brick axial and end wall stacks.
