Description

Plas Gwilym is a building constructed of brick with stone dressings and a slate roof, dating from the 19th century. It is two storeys high and features a three-window range with a central entrance. The design exhibits a balanced asymmetry, highlighted by an advanced gabled wing to the left of the main range and an entrance tower at the angle. The gabled porch, supported by a brick and stone base, has open-work timber and a pendant finial on its enriched bargeboards. Above the doorway is a two-light mullioned and transomed window with a relieving arch, and the upper stage of the tower contains a blind trefoiled lancet. The tower is topped with a bell-cast pavilion roof, which is adorned with wrought iron brattishing.

On the right side, there is a canted bay window with mullioned and transomed lights on the ground floor, and an upper window beneath a gabled dormer featuring fretted bargeboards. The gabled return has a two-light wood mullioned and transomed window, with the upper window having been renewed. The enriched bargeboards also feature a pendant finial. The left side presents an asymmetrical gable facing the street, with a four-light mullioned and transomed window on the ground floor and a two-light oriel window above, both adorned with fretted bargeboards and a finial. The return elevation to the former side garden on the southwest includes a central gable with a canted bay window and a mullioned and transomed window above.

To the northeast is a service wing, which has undergone some alterations to its windows due to its conversion to offices. The building retains its original plan and much of its decorative detail, including a tiled entrance hall, a top-lit staircase with trefoiled panelled balusters, several fireplaces, and joinery details featuring stilted shafts in the doorcase of the lower floor.
