Description

5 Salisbury Road is a two-storey building dating from the 19th century, constructed of stucco over brick with a slate roof. The design is symmetrical, featuring advanced hipped roofed outer bays at Nos 1 and 5, with a central five-window range for No 3. The entrances to Nos 1 and 5 are set back and located beneath towers.

An arcade of coupled square-section Tuscan piers supports an entablature with a dentilled cornice, running between the two outer bays. The central entrance has a studded door and flanking recessed windows for No 3. Above, there are two-pane sash windows with a continuous bracketed band and stressed architraves that include keystones. These details are replicated on all other first-floor windows.

The advanced outer bays feature angle quoins and each has a canted bay window with floor-height opening casements, along with a sash window above. There is a blind segmentally arched recess on the return elevation. The set-back entrance blocks on each side have studded doors with overlights beneath entablature hoods supported by brackets.

The towers include a blind round arched window in the second stage and paired round arched windows in the upper stage, set within a panel formed by angle quoins and a cornice. The overhanging pyramidal roofs are supported by modillion brackets. Behind the tower, there is a three-window range with arcaded lower floor windows between rusticated pilasters, and three two-pane sash windows above. The eaves throughout the building are overhanging and feature modillion brackets. The axial stacks in the central range have projecting caps with a modillion cornice.
