Description

The Old Registry Office is a three-storey building with a stucco exterior over brick, featuring rustication on the ground floor and a slate roof. It has a three-window range with a central entrance and a double pile plan consisting of two parallel gabled ranges. The entrance is highlighted by a portico porch supported by coupled Tuscan columns, and it is flanked by 12-pane floor-height sash windows on both the ground and first floors. Above the doorway, there is a floor-height 2-light casement window, and the attic storey has 16-pane sash windows. The building is adorned with moulded brackets under the overhanging eaves and has shallow coped gables.

Inside, the original layout remains largely intact, featuring a central entrance hall divided by an archway, with stairs leading to the rear. The early 18th-century staircase has turned balusters, a heavy ramped rail, and square-section newels. The staircase splits above the ground floor, providing access to the front and rear ranges of the upper storey, although the flights have been mostly replaced. Several rooms retain early 18th-century joinery and plasterwork details, such as internal window shutters and doorcases. One room on the ground floor features painted panelling with tall panels above the dado, a moulded cornice, and plaster-panelling on the ceiling beam. A first-floor room has scrolled plaster panels, while the enriched plaster ceiling has been renewed following fire damage.
